My Week in Books: December 26-January 1

My Week in Books

Happy New Year!! Welcome to my weekly Saturday feature here at Erin Reads, where I highlight new books that have entered my life, what I’ve been reading, and what’s happened on Erin Reads over the past week.

New Acquisitions

This week’s My Week in Books is a special holiday edition, coming to you from my parents’ house in Ohio and sharing what I’ve received and purchased over the holidays.

For Christmas:

From Half Price Books (I just can’t resist!):

Read This Week

My reading always slows down when I’m at my parents’ house. With all four siblings plus my parents around, quiet reading moments are scarce! I’ve been slowly making my way through The Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri for my book group’s January meeting and A Cup of Friendship by Deborah Rodriguez for LibraryThing’s Early Reviewers program. On my new Sony Reader (still nameless!), I’ve started an ARC of Delirium by Lauren Oliver, which is good so far.

On audio, I’ve made a little headway on Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll, which I’m listening to for my Classics Reclamation Project. I’m also about halfway through The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood.

Erin Reads Recap

Since it’s been two weeks since my last My Week in Books, I’ll organize my recap thematically instead of chronologically.

I also shared my initial reaction to my new Sony Reader (I love it!).

  1. War and Peace is one of the books I would like to read this year (it was part of my reading projects last year too !). I am confident that you’ll enjoy 84, Charing Cross Road, it’s so charming and witty !
Happy new year to you !

    1. I just marked out my copy of War and Peace so that I can see what reading I have to do each month. I’m excited! I’m looking forward to 84, Charing Cross Road as a nice, short, delightful sort of book.

      Happy New Year!

    1. Me too! It looks so good! I’m excited for Ella Minnow Pea, too. It’s been on my list forever, but I never remember it when I’m out shopping for books!

  2. ’84 Charing Cross Road’ is one of those books without which life would not go on. It is ‘the’ book to which I turn whenever I’m feeling too ill to give my attention to anything other than my oldest and dearest friend. I love all Hanff’s work, but there is nothing that quite matches this first one. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

    1. Oh, now I am even more excited and interested to read 84, Charing Cross Road! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it — your comments make me want to read it even more!

  3. Happy New Year! I Capture the Castle has one of my favorite opening lines ever.

I’ve been reading the Indie Lit Awards short list this week. And thanks for the reminder that I need to grab War and Peace from the shelf.

    1. You’re right — it does! (Just checked 🙂 ) Looking forward to your thoughts on the Indie Lit Awards titles, when I catch up from my week-plus of being mostly cut off from the blogging world!

    1. I agree, it was a good pick! Everyone seems to have loved it, so I’m looking forward to reading it!

  4. I love love love I Capture The Castle so I hope you enjoy it too! If only I found all classics similarly enchanting, I’d surely read more of them! 😀

    1. I’m probably three quarters done by now. It’s certainly a longer one, with a lot of stuff in it! I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts as well!
