Thoughts on the Temeraire Series by Naomi Novik (Audiobooks)

I spent most of September listening to the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik, read by the marvelous Simon Vance. I borrowed it from my public library.

About the Books:

I already talked about the first book in this series, His Majesty’s Dragon. Rather than summarize each book, I’ll just say . . . → Read More: Thoughts on the Temeraire Series by Naomi Novik (Audiobooks)

Thoughts on “The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making” by Catherynne Valente

After reading many glowing reviews of The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne Valente, I knew I wanted to read it. A member of my book group was kind enough to lend me her copy.

About the Book:

At 12 years old, September is a precocious . . . → Read More: Thoughts on “The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making” by Catherynne Valente

Thoughts on “His Majesty’s Dragon” by Naomi Novik (Audiobook)

One of my former coworkers was forever recommending Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series to customers. When I found out that Simon Vance, whose narrating prowess I had heard about but never experienced, read the entire series, I knew what my next audiobook would be.

CRP: “The Chronicles of Narnia” by C.S. Lewis (Part 2)

Halloween for the Faint of Heart: Spooky Audiobooks

Last Friday I introduced a miniseries featuring some of my favorite audiobooks. Since Halloween is right around the corner, I thought I’d highlight two of my spookier picks! I didn’t realize until I began writing this post that both of my choices are (1) about young boys battling the forces of evil, and (2) narrated by Brits! The two books provide quite different experiences, though: the first is spooky and fantastical, while the second is rather zany. . . . → Read More: Halloween for the Faint of Heart: Spooky Audiobooks

Thoughts on “The Phantom Tollbooth” by Norton Juster

10-year-old Milo isn’t interested in anything at all. Life is boring, ho-hum. That is, until he comes home one day to find a mysterious package in his room. “ONE GENUINE TURNPIKE TOLLBOOTH,” reads the accompanying card. “EASILY ASSEMBLED AT HOME, AND FOR USE BY THOSE WHO HAVE NEVER TRAVELED IN LANDS BEYOND.” Confused, but having nothing better to do, Milo assembles the tollbooth (signs and all), hops into his small mechanical car, and drives through. In short, The Phantom Tollbooth is a lot of fun. Anyone who enjoys light fantasy, likes words and language, or has a penchant for well-done allegory will no doubt be glad they spent a few hours breezing through this childhood classic. . . . → Read More: Thoughts on “The Phantom Tollbooth” by Norton Juster

Thoughts on “A Most Improper Magick” by Stephanie Burgis

I’ll be spending this week talking about the books I read during last Saturday’s Readathon. I’ll be going in order from least favorite to most.

The last book I read during the October 2010 Readathon was A Most Improper Magick by Stephanie Burgis. Because I read in the wee hours of the morning, it . . . → Read More: Thoughts on “A Most Improper Magick” by Stephanie Burgis

Thoughts on “When You Reach Me” by Rebecca Stead

When Rebecca Stead’s middle grade novel When You Reach Me won the Newbery earlier this year, I  meant to read it right away. Now, nine months later, I finally got to it. I devoured it in a single day.

Miranda is a pretty typical 12-year-old. She adores Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time. . . . → Read More: Thoughts on “When You Reach Me” by Rebecca Stead
